Detailed description
To Nu jackfruit is a specialty jackfruit variety prominent in Vietnam. Its fruits are oblong, with a thick rind covered in flat spines. They are medium-sized, generally weighing less than 2 kg.
The jackfruit flesh is crispy, sweet, and refreshing, with few fibers and large seeds. Its strong aroma has a hint of durian, making it a popular jackfruit variety throughout Southern Vietnam.
Variety and Origin
To Nu jackfruit's binomial name is Artocarpus integer, belonging to the Moraceae family. It is native to Southeast Asia, from the Malay Peninsula to Papua New Guinea.
This variety has been widely introduced and cultivated in Vietnam, especially in Dong Nai province, where it develops its most characteristic sweetness and aroma.
External Appearance
To Nu jackfruit is oblong, ranging from 22 cm to 50 cm in length and 10 cm to 17 cm in width.
The rind is firm, thick, and flexible, covered with small, flat spines; its cross-section structure is similar to that of wet jackfruit but firmer.
Flesh and Flavor
The jackfruit segments are yellow to orange, sometimes with a slight greenish tint, with large, firm seeds.
The flesh is crispy, sweet, and refreshing, with minimal large fibers that get stuck in the teeth. It has a strong aroma with a subtle, lingering aftertaste reminiscent of durian.
The jackfruit fibers are very small and thin, minimally clinging to the mouth, providing a clean eating experience.
Size and Weight
Each fruit weighs on average 1–6 kg, mostly under 2 kg, making it convenient for selling and transporting.
This size and weight ensure even ripening, full segments, and longer freshness compared to other larger jackfruit varieties.
Growing Region and Ecological Conditions
To Nu jackfruit thrives in the Mekong Delta region, particularly in Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, and Dong Nai provinces, where the land is fertile alluvial soil and the canal system is abundant.
This variety is suitable for humid tropical climates with an average temperature of 24–35 °C and rainfall of 1,500–2,500 mm per year.
The trees begin to bear fruit after 3–5 years of planting. The harvest season lasts about 6 weeks, and they can produce two crops per year.
