Pearl barley – Scientific name Herba Phyllanthi amari has many other names due to local dialects. In the Northwest highlands, it is called Pearl barley (the jewel of the herb), but the most common name is Phyllanthus amarus. In the book “Đông dược thần thảo tòng thu” by Grand Physician Tuệ Tĩnh, it is called “chó đẻ” because in rural areas, female dogs after giving birth often go to the garden to find this plant to chew for 2-3 consecutive days to stop bleeding and protect their lives – An instinct of self-defense that nature gives to animals.
According to Traditional Vietnamese Medicine, Pearl barley is bitter, neutral in nature. It enters the liver and lung meridians.
Main functions:
– Detoxification, blood circulation, liver benefit, liver cleansing, bright eyes, water metabolism benefit
– Used for hepatitis, jaundice, sore throat acne, neurodermatitis, eczema, nephritis, edema, urinary calculi, enterocolitis.
– According to modern medicine, it has been proven by scientists
In 1988, Blumberg and Thiogarajan published that they treated 37 patients with hepatitis B virus with Phyllanthus Amarus and achieved a negative result in 22/37 after 30 days
According to a summary report by Dr. Lê Minh Khôi – Hue Central Hospital conducted in 2010, 40% of people who regularly use beer and alcohol (in the synthesized group) have fatty liver disease; 10% of them progress to liver cancer. About half of patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis will progress to cirrhosis, and about a quarter of patients with mild alcoholic hepatitis may develop cirrhosis in the following years. Cirrhosis patients often die from complications such as brain disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, severe exhaustion, liver cancer…
Bitter substances (phyllathin, hypophyllanthin, triacontanal) in bitter Phyllanthus amarus have many medicinal effects, especially the ability to detoxify, restore normal liver function, good for cases of impaired liver function due to excessive alcohol consumption. These substances increase the amount of glutathione – a liver-protecting substance that is often severely deficient in people who regularly consume alcohol. In 1995, Brazilian scientists also discovered the strong and sustained analgesic effect of this plant. This effect is thought to be due to gallic acid, which is significant in the condition of hepatitis, liver damage from alcohol.
Phyllanthus amarus (Pearl barley) raw materials grown in the South Central region are certified by GACP-WHO, suitable for soil and climate to have the highest active ingredients used to produce drugs for pharmaceutical companies in Europe

It is a herb that strengthens the spleen and qi, moistens the lungs, reduces cough, detoxifies; used in cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency, poor appetite, cough with phlegm, palpitations. In this preparation, Licorice plays a role in balancing the bitterness of Phyllanthus amarus
The combination of these 3 herbs makes PEARL BARLEY TEA have a slightly bitter, sweet aftertaste, cool in nature, entering the Liver, Kidney, and Lung meridians. The preparation has a comprehensive function of clearing the Liver and detoxifying, diuretic, helping digestion. Thanks to the harmonious combination of herbs that protect the liver and gallbladder, it not only enhances the liver's detoxification function, but also helps prevent and support the treatment of many chronic diseases related to the liver's metabolic function such as dyslipidemia, increased uric acid, increased blood sugar, decreased liver and kidney function, hypertension…
